Main conclusions

The main conclusions obtained from the Sustainabuild project Strategic Design Framework can be summarized as follows:

The analytical framework was crafted utilizing diverse tools, including a comprehensive literature review, online questionnaires, and insightful focus group interviews. Information for this report was sourced from a broad spectrum, encompassing construction companies, public bodies, academia, and individuals outside the industry (citizens). The key findings are outlined as follows:

  • Despite general awareness of sustainability topics aligning with SDGs, a knowledge gap exists regarding the framework itself.
  • Legislative and economic barriers hinder SDG implementation in the construction sector.
  • The construction industry views SDGs as valuable tools for environmental improvement; willingness to integrate them into business strategies is evident.
  • Higher education programs in the fields of construction and architecture often lack SDG integration, but academia is committed to change, emphasizing both knowledge and awareness.
  • Inconsistent support for SDG implementation in construction exists among public bodies, with notable variations across European countries.
  • Non-industry individuals (citizens) believe government responsibility is crucial for SDG implementation, expecting positive impacts on quality of life and environmental reputation.
